Flood Restoration, Part 1: Assessing the Damage
Have you ever wondered what it takes to completely restore a flooded property from start to finish? There may be more steps involved than you think. In fact, there are quite a few things that need to happen before the actual drying process begins. Here is a checklist of things to do before you begin the drying and repairing your home:
- Cut off water source. If the flood was caused by a burst pipe or malfunctioning appliance, the water needs to be shut off first and foremost.
- Safety first! Many times the structural integrity of a building is compromised during a flood. Turn off all power and gas to the building as there can be live wires or leaks. If there is any sign that you should not enter the building, or you feel uncomfortable doing so, call a professional. - Address all health concerns. In addition to the building possibly being unsafe, flooding can cause certain health risks. If there is a significant amount of mold, or any sewage or unidentified debris, call a professional before entering.
- Keep a visual and written record of all damage. Make sure to take thorough pictures and notes of any and all damage. This is needed for insurance claims.
Once you have assessed the damage of your property, you can begin with the initial repair and drying process.
